Fabrizia Buongiorno

Maria Fabrizia Buongiorno graduated in Geological Sciences from the University of Rome 'La Sapienza' and is a Senior Technologist at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). Since her thesis, she has been involved in research using proximal, airborne and spaceborne remote sensing systems for the study of geophysical and environmental phenomena. She is currently Director of the Environment Department at INGV, and coordinated the INGV Center for Earth Space Observations (COS) from 2020 to 2025. Between 2021 and 2024, she served as President of the company E-GEOS (a Telespazio/ASI subsidiary). She was a visiting researcher at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1990-1991, specialising in thermal IR remote sensing sensors for the study of thermal characteristics and gas emissions in volcanic areas. After the establishment of INGV (1999), from 2003 to 2014 she was head of the Remote Sensing Functional Unit at the National Earthquake Centre and national coordinator of remote sensing activities (2005-2014). From 2003 to 2010 she was a member of the Italian Steering Committee of GMES, coordinated by the Ministry of Scientific Research and the Ministry of the Environment, contributing to the development of the COPERNICUS system. She actively collaborates with ASI, ESA and NASA, participating in the Mission Advisory Groups of many EO missions, and in particular for the PRISMA, EnMap, LSTM and SBG missions (2019-2025). Since 2013, she has been co-chair with USGS of the Earth Science Working Group within the framework of the bilateral 'USA-ITALY in Science and Technology' agreement. She is a member of several scientific committees as an INGV representative. She is involved in education and outreach, and has been a lecturer in the Environmental Remote Sensing course at the Faculty of Sciences in Rome since 2024.
